PUB OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2010 - QUEENS ARMS, CHEADLE
The "Pub of the Month" for September is the Queens Arms, Queen Street, Cheadle, ST10
1BQ.
It was built approximately 150 years ago at the end of a row of terraced houses, which are thought to have been built to provide accommodation for textile workers at a local silk mill, the site of which is now occupied by JCB.
It was therefore, and still is, a traditional "working mans" pub, the only major alterations being the replacement of the toilet facilities and the provision of a function room.
Over the years it has been owned by a number of breweries/ pub companies - Joules, Bass, Avebury Taverns and Punch Taverns; currently it is under a tenancy agreement between Punch and Hesley Inns, and in the capable hands of Dean, Tracy and bar staff Steve and Lynne.
Under Hesley Inns it has undergone a major refurbishment in keeping with its traditional
atmosphere even to the point of retaining quarry tiled floors in the bar and some other areas.
Darts and cribbage are the two main team activities played here, with a skittles table and pool table also being available. One of the local football teams also uses the Queens for its base.
Other facilities include the provision of Sky Sports and an outside beer garden to the rear of the premises. Two hand-pull pumps are provided serving regular beers Marstons Pedigree and Everards Tiger.
Queen Street (the B5417) is the Oakamoor/ Alton Towers road out of Cheadle and is just out of the main town centre (just around the corner from the Alton Castle).
First Bus services 32 and 32A from Hanley and D & G Bus services 7 and 7A from Longton serve Cheadle.
The presentation will take place directly after the Branch meeting being held at the Queens Arms at around 2pm on Saturday 4th September.
